Getting zapped by a laser may seem like a torturous way to get rid of unwanted hair. But with advances in laser technology, it’s probably less painful than waxing and tweezing.
At Laser Bar and Spa in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, we’ve been removing unwanted hair with laser technology for more than 10 years. We understand your fears, but we want you to know that laser hair removal is virtually painless when you have the right laser tool.
Here, we tell you what you can expect with our laser hair removal procedure and what we do to make it as painless as possible.
Lasers for hair removal
Using lasers for hair removal started in the mid-1990s and it’s now one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the United States. Lasers work by targeting and destroying the hair follicle under the skin, preventing further hair growth.
A number of effective laser tools are available for laser hair removal. At Laser Bar and Spa, we use the Cynosure® laser system because Cynosure is a world leader in energy-based aesthetic and medical procedures, and it’s constantly updating its technology so patients get the best results.
Minimizing pain during laser therapy
Cynosure’s laser hair removal system gives us the ability to customize treatments to match your skin type and goals.
The laser’s smart technology emits energy that quickly and effectively targets the hair follicle without causing any damage to the skin, minimizing discomfort. Our laser hair removal system also has a skin cooling system to help with pain control.
Though most of our patients tolerate laser therapy with minimal discomfort, some report feeling a tingling or snapping sensation when the laser hits the hair follicle. For our pain-sensitive patients, we may apply a numbing lotion to the skin before we start treatment.
You shouldn’t wax or pluck your unwanted hair for at least six weeks before your laser treatment. Plucking and waxing disturbs the hair follicle, affecting results of laser therapy.
We do, however, need you to shave the hair on the day of your treatment. Shaving prevents the hair from absorbing the laser light and singeing the skin.
Is laser therapy right for me?
If you’re tired of plucking, waxing, and shaving your unwanted hair, laser hair removal may be a great solution for you. However, we only recommend laser therapy after a comprehensive evaluation.
Laser therapy for unwanted hair doesn’t hurt, but it isn’t a quick fix. Because hair grows in stages, you need multiple sessions to get the best results. You may also need touch-up treatments after your initial laser therapy to keep your skin as hair-free as possible.
If you can tolerate waxing, you can tolerate laser therapy. Call our office today to schedule an appointment and learn more about our painless laser hair removal treatments.
